SOMSIREN x SHIRLEY VILLAVICENCIO PIZANGO

This months art feature is dedicated to the talented artist Shirley Villavicencio Pizango (@shurleey) Shirley was born in Lima, Peru, a country I am very fond of since visiting a few years back. Its’ profound landscapes, lush colors and shapes are in and of itself a natural work of art. I became aware of Shirley’s work through social media, and was immediately captivated by her almost effortless composition, her use of color and how she makes POC the focal of her paintings. Which I learned after reading through her bio, is her way of standing up to the conventional exoticism, very much present in western art history. 

Shirley now resides in Belgium and is represented by Gallery Geukens & De Vil. She has shown her work in solo shows and also group exhibitions within Belgium and abroad. When I spoke to Shirley it was evident that music plays a role in her expression, she said, “I like to mix different genres in music, this influences the way I paint in a certain way. I’m also a person who needs a lot of impulses while working. I listen to all kinds of styles and my attention span is rather short in music. I can switch from Chopin to Reggaeton in a heartbeat to maintain my current flow.” Please enjoy this beautiful painting she made especially for SOMSIREN and the playlist we created below.
